Clinical Compliance for Veterinary Technology Programs

Updated October 2026

Veterinary technology students handle live animals in campus labs and complete externships at clinics, hospitals and other sites. Their compliance list looks different from human health programs: rabies protection comes first, and each off-campus site needs an agreement.

Veterinary technology programs are accredited by the AVMA Committee on Veterinary Technician Education and Activities (CVTEA). Your program and externship sites decide the exact list.

What veterinary technology students usually need before animal handling and externships

  • Rabies vaccination or a mitigation protocol. CVTEA requires students to be vaccinated against rabies before live animal use, or the program to implement a comprehensive rabies mitigation protocol. (source)
  • Rabies risk category. CDC’s advisory committee places veterinarians, technicians and their students or trainees in a rabies risk category with a pre-exposure vaccination recommendation. (source)
  • Externship site documents, such as a signed agreement or site orientation form, collected before the first day.
  • Background check or drug screen where an externship site requires one.

What’s specific to veterinary technology programs

  • Unvaccinated students. Under CVTEA standards, unvaccinated students may handle only fully vaccinated and seroconverted mammals, with the exception of rodents and rabbits. (source)
  • Externship hours. CVTEA says externship or preceptorship experiences should total a minimum of 240 cumulative contact hours. (source)
  • Off-campus site agreements. CVTEA requires a memorandum of understanding or contractual arrangement with all off-campus sites. (source)

How Drug Free Schools handles it

Everything below runs in one clinical compliance tracking portal shared by all of your school’s health science programs.

  • One portal, your requirement list. Set how each item renews: flu by season, CPR through the end of the printed month, Tdap every ten years. Add another way to meet a requirement, or a declination pathway.
  • Every upload reviewed within 24 hours. If something is wrong, the student sees the exact reason and what to upload instead.
  • Upload guides for every requirement: an example of the right document, the common reasons for rejection, and a blank form to download.
  • Deadlines and reminders by email and text, and a dashboard that shows anyone not cleared for an upcoming rotation.
  • Clinical sites built in. Track affiliation agreements, assign students to rotations, log clinical hours, and block anyone who isn't cleared from being placed. Send a site exactly the records it needs through a secure link with an access code that expires in 30 days.

For veterinary technology programs: Track rabies vaccination as a series with a titer where your protocol calls for one, flag unvaccinated students before live animal labs, and keep each externship site’s agreement with its expiry date.

Frequently asked questions

What do veterinary technology students need before working with animals?

CVTEA requires rabies vaccination before live animal use, or a comprehensive rabies mitigation protocol run by the program. Externship sites may add their own items, such as a signed agreement, a background check or a drug screen.

Can rabies vaccination and titers be tracked?

Yes. Track each dose and any titer with its date, and set a reminder for whatever schedule your program’s protocol uses. Every upload is reviewed within 24 hours.

How much does the compliance portal cost?

$30 per student, one time for the whole program, not a yearly fee. Administrator and faculty accounts are free, and the school can pay instead of the student.

Can one portal cover all of our health science programs?

Yes. Each program gets its own requirement list and renewal rules, while the school has one portal and one support line, 7 days a week by phone, text or email, for students and school staff.
